Karen Bovard learned to tat from her grandmother in her teens and later found out that her other grandparents had also tatted.
After Karen married and moved to Omaha, she discovered a newly-formed club called The ShuttleBugs Tatting Club of Omaha, and then she started teaching the how-to's of tatting, locally.
Shortly after discovering a whole world of tatting resources, she found her niche in studying tatting techniques beyond basic tatting, and created a tatted motorcycle to put those skills into practice.
When The ShuttleBugs club hosted a tatting workshop, Karen took on the task of the advanced workshop portion - due to her interest in anything technique related.
Karen also has such a fascination with Split Rings, that she has published 2 books to Split Ring Tatting: Fun with Split Ring Tatting, and MORE Fun with Split Ring Tatting - and you can find them both here.

In later years, Karen used her technique skills to teach at national needlework shows. She ended up teaching for the Creative Arts & Teaching Show for 6 years - going on the nationiwide show circuit - teaching tatting, needlelace and other needlework technique classes.
Karen is known as The ShuttleSmith. However, she used to be known as The ShuttleSmith Sterling Silver Tatting Shuttle manufacturer. After she was no longer able to get the materials at an affordable cost, she retired from silver shuttle making. Now, she makes Copper-Enameled tatting shuttles (Look for Glass Enameled/Copper Tatting Shuttles; 9th link down from Pages on This Site).
